Other Enchantments
There are other enchantments in Minecraft such as:
The Covid-19 global pandemic may have turned everything upside down, but one competition is uniquely suited for the current landscape – esports. With the cancellation of in-person, live sporting events because of the outbreak, colleges are turning to esports to help fill the void left by athletics. While the likes of CS:GO, League of Legends, Dota 2, and Call of Duty continue to command the lion’s share of the attention, two games are experiencing a recent surge in popularity and attracting thousands of viewers – Minecraft and Smite.
Best Smite In Minecraft
Minecraft
Minecraft is not exactly the first thing that springs to mind when people talk about esports. After all, it was made to be an open-world, sandbox game. Still, the potential is there.
Do you know that Minecraft is still one of the most-watched games on YouTube? It’s been over a decade since it was first released in early access in 2019, but the free-to-play game has displayed some serious staying power. In fact, Minecraft raked in a whopping 100.2 billion views on its way to becoming the most-viewed video game on YouTube in 2019. YouTube has canceled its annual Rewind video this year due to the global pandemic, but if it does reveal the statistics for the most-viewed video games in 2020, you will likely see Minecraft on that list again.
It’s the same on Twitch. Minecraft has been one of the most popular games on Twitch ever since the live streaming video platform came into existence in 2011, and the game has continued to attract tens of thousands of viewers thanks to the MC Championship, a monthly Minecraft esports competition organized by Noxcrew and YouTuber Scott Major, who is better known online as Dangthatsalongname. So yes, there is a place for competitive Minecraft and people are interested in watching it.
Sure, you will find people who’ll say that Minecraft is just not suited for esports because of its mechanics and how it’s not a player versus player type of game. However, Microsoft seems to think the game has a lot of potential as an esport, especially in educational settings.
In June 2020, Microsoft announced the release of seven new Minecraft: Education Edition esports worlds with lesson plans and educator frameworks. This is a good blend of esports and education because the competitive element is expected to help students build STEM skills, encourage collaboration, and support social-emotional learning.
In November 2020, the first-ever Minecraft Education Global Build Championship also took place for students using Minecraft: Education Edition. Students were asked to come up with design ideas that would support a healthy environment for both humans and animals during the competition, so apart from using their creativity, students were encouraged to think about the future of the world as well.
As you can see, Minecraft’s usefulness as a virtual learning space cannot be overstated. Who wouldn’t want to get the chance to learn things and have fun at the same time?
Aside from its potential for reaching a large and engaged audience, the game has also brought students together during the pandemic. Since they couldn’t go to school physically, students all over the world found a way to show off school pride by creating virtual replicas of their campuses in Minecraft. Now that’s being creative.

Smite
Smite Minecraft Wiki
Like Minecraft, Smite is still as popular as ever. The Smite esports community isn’t as large as the League of Legends or Dota 2 communities, but the game has continued to make waves in the collegiate scene.
Smite Minecraft Enderman
Leading college esports organizer American Video Game League (AVGL) has once again partnered with developers Hi-Rez Studios for another season of the AVGL Smite Collegiate Championship, and after two months of competitive play starting in October, the teams representing Georgia State University and Arizona State University are going to be duking it out in the grand finals on January 10, 2021, at 12:00 PM ET.
The prize pool for the tournament stands at $10,000, so there’s a lot of money up for grabs. However, there’s more than just prize money at stake here. Like their traditional athlete counterparts, these e-athletes are also battling for their school’s pride and name. You won’t hear the crowds cheer them on from the bleachers, but thousands are going to tune in to see how their teams perform in this battle for supremacy in the mythical world of Smite.
Smite may not have as many streamers and viewers as Minecraft, but it still has over 30 million players worldwide.
Minecraft and Smite: More Than Just a Game
According to research conducted by Nielsen in 2018, two-thirds of the U.S. population over the age of 13 are considered gamers. That’s a sizeable number of people, and this includes kids who are going to be college-aged young adults in a few years.
The fact is that the current generation of students has been playing video games for most of their lives. If you want to keep them engaged in the classroom and their school community, you have to understand that gaming is a part of who they are, and esports is a great way to grab their attention.

Just take a look at how those students build a sense of comradery by recreating their schools virtually on Minecraft. Even if this wasn’t in an esports setting, the game still had a positive effect on the students, and they happened to be showcasing their schools to the whole world.
The popularity of collegiate esports has been growing rapidly even before the outbreak, and a lot of colleges and universities have already hopped aboard the esports train. In fact, since it was formed in 2016, the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) has ballooned from six members to more than 170 member schools. NACE is now recognized as the country’s premier governing body for varsity-level esports with its members offering around $16 million per year in scholarships to over 5,000 student-athletes. And according to the world’s largest operator of collegiate esports leagues Tespa, more than 1,350 schools and over 40,000 players have competed in tournaments they’ve held, and they have awarded around $3.3 million in scholarships and prizes to students.

Esports has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade, and if you want to attract today’s youth, you need to embrace it and learn to leverage it as a platform for engagement.
